Some homeowners are fooled by fly-by-night roofers, who ask for down payment for roof projects even without planning to complete them. To fight against these scam artists, the Palmetto State imposed a new law that protects homeowners against fraudulent contractors. The said law allows the homeowners to cancel any roofing contract within five days of receiving a notice that all or any part of the claim is not covered by their insurance. Down payments are also prohibited during the said duration. Russ Dubisky, the executive director of the SC Insurance News Service, advised homeowners to take time when looking for contractors. Know if the prospective firm has past complaints at the local Better Business Bureau before scheduling an appointment. Trustworthy roofing companies in Columbia, SC may be hard to come by, but it is worth the wait.
